Lactam \Lac"tam\, n. [Lactone amido.] (Chem.)
One of a series of anhydrides of an amido type, analogous to
the lactones, as oxindol; a cyclic amide.

four-membered ring, which includes the amide nitrogen and
the carbonyl carbon.
